Once in a great while, fans and scholars of the specific music genre known as “power
pop” will unearth an album by a new or heretofore unknown artist and instantly and
collectively cheer with unabashed glee.
It’s been a while, but in May of 2021 the Los Angeles based label Lollipop Records will
release such an album by a never-before heard of band called THE RED LOCUSTS.
The debut album features 10 songs of classic pop rock with impeccable musicianship
and vocals, masterful production, lush arrangements, instantly memorable melodies
and fat, sticky choruses that deliver instantly classic pop rock.
Not much is known about the band or its members but what is made clear by their
impressive debut album, the music stands out in today’s bland audio landscape. Fans
of The Weeknd or Machine Gun Kelly...The Red Locusts are not for you. The music is
clearly and hugely influenced by classic pop and rock. Fans of The Beatles, The Beach
Boys, Jellyfish, Fountains Of Wayne, ELO, Big Star, The Move, The Raspberries, and the
like will get what The Red Locusts are pushing.
While it’s been heavily rumored that the members of the band have toured and
recorded with musical legends such as Ringo Starr, Elton John, David Lee Roth, Rick
Springfield, Toto, Electric Light Orchestra, Spinal Tap, The Flash, Badfinger, Coheed
and Cambria, and Brian Wilson...as of the date of the writing of this bio, none of this
can be confirmed or denied by the band or Lollipop Records.
The lead single “Honestly” mixes Paul Ramone, Scotty Skuffleton and Duncan Sweets
trading lead vocals, incredible group harmonies, and a chorus that will refuse to leave
your brain after the first listen.
The other focus track on the album, “Another Bad Day For Cupid”, shows off Paul
Ramone’s silky tenor lead vocals, more incredible group harmonies and guitar/
harmonica riff-play that channels “I Should Have Known Better” into 2021.
Additional highlights on this album full of highlights include the achingly beautiful
“Miss Daisy Hawkins” featuring strings and horns arranged by Paul; the snaky and
rocking “Glow Worm” featuring lead vocals by Duncan; the anthemic “Sons And
Daughters”; and the final song of the collection “Love is Gonna Save the Day” with a
triple lead vocal trade-off by Skippy, Paul and Scotty. With five vocalists in the band,
intricate and engaging vocal harmonies are not lacking on the album.
“We’ve been accused of ripping off everyone from The Beatles to Rivers Cuomo and
frankly, who gives a toss,” says vocalist and guitarist Paul Ramone. “I come from the
actual birthplace of modern power pop, Brooklyn! The Red Locusts are simply writing
and recording what we’re into...great rock and roll.”
“Exactly,” seconds bassist and vocalist Scotty Skuffleton. “I’m happy people compare
Paul’s vocals to Rick Springfield but frankly, Rick couldn’t hold Paul’s jock strap in the
studio or on the stage.”
Adds brother Skippy, “at the end of the day, who cares about who is in this band? Who
cares that Paul Ramone is an insufferable jerk? Who cares if Ringo Starr didn’t like
what I played for him? Morrissey and Liam Gallagher love us and that is all that
matters!”
